News Eötvös 80: programs by the Eötvös Péter Contemporary Music Foundation

In June, the mentoring programme of the Eötvös Péter Contemporary Music Foundation will continue with another masterclass, talks and concert at the Budapest Music Center, which Péter Eötvös took part in planning but unfortunately could not live to see them realized. Péter Eötvös, who passed away in March, was one of the best-known composers and conductors in 20th- and 21st-century music, and attached great importance to passing on his extensive knowledge and experience to others. The intensive five-day masterclass, this time led by Gregory Vajda, is a tribute to his work. The Ars Nova Ensemble returns to Budapest for the third time to be the interpreter of contemporary music. The other professor of the masterclass is Benoît Sitzia, General Director of the Ars Nova Ensemble, who has worked with Eötvös on several occasions over a long period of time. At the closing concert of the masterclass, on the evening of 15 June in the Concert Hall, pieces by Péter Eötvös, György Kurtág and György Ligeti will be performed as a mirror-program, the audience can enjoy the works twice – conducted by different young conductors.

On 10 June, at the traditional mustMEET Composers talks, music historian Gergely Fazekas will ask Benoît Sitzia about his musical thinking and the process of composition, and how Péter Eötvös's works have influenced his own compositional technique. The conversation will be in English. Violinist Catherine Jacquet will perform a piece by Eötvös and Sitzia in the BMC Library, and a couple of recordings by the two composers will be heard as well.
