This fall, we are once again dedicating two days to the fresh and at once thought-provoking world of Finnish jazz: on 30 and 31 October, BMC and the Finnish Institute in Hungary, FinnAgora, jointly organizes their annual mini-festival, New Jazz from Finland.

EMMA and Yrjö-award-winning saxophonist Timo Lassy’s current focus is the Timo Lassy Trio – a stripped-down yet fiercely expressive unit with bassist Ville Herrala and drummer Jaska Lukkarinen, taking to the stage on 30 October. The trio’s dynamic interplay and deep musical bond are at the core of both their 2021 studio debut Trio and the follow-up live recording Live in Helsinki, released via We Jazz Records in 2025. Whether on stage or in the studio, the trio blends hard-grooving jazz, raw improvisation, and emotional depth, offering a sound that’s both rooted in tradition and boldly forward-looking. With sold-out shows and growing international acclaim, the Timo Lassy Trio proves that jazz played from the heart resonates everywhere.

On 31 October, the Alexi Tuomarila Quartet brings together four distinctive voices from the Nordic jazz scene in the Opus Jazz Club. EMMA-award-winning Alexi Tuomarila toured for a decade with legendary Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko. Bendik Hofseth came to international prominence after succeeding Michael Brecker in Steps Ahead. Markku Ounaskari is one of Finland's most internationally recognised jazz musicians, with an extensive discography including numerous ECM recordings. Mikael Saastamoinen represents a younger generation of Finnish improvisers and is known for his work with Linda Fredriksson. Together, the quartet explores Tuomarila's compositions, combining strong melodic and harmonic identities with openness, space and spontaneous interplay.
