The 1973 born saxophonist Artis Gāga finished his classical saxophone studies at the Latvian Academy of Music in 1997. Following this he earned the Prix Superior degree in the Luxembourg Conservatory at one of the greatest French masters of classical saxophone, Claude DeLangle. He studied playing jazz on his instrument in the United States at George Garzone and Billy Harper. Subsequently, his attention turned increasingly to the interaction between various kinds of composition and improvised music, though he never broke up his affection to classical music. This is particularly displayed in some of his special compositions as well as his choice of themes. He has several sacral compositions, his largest one is an Easter Oratorio for chamber orchestra, soloists and choir, entitled Consummatum Est. He wrote also music for theatre and film. Three albums of him received the Latvian Record Award, further two were nominated.

On his debut at the Opus Jazz Club Artis Gāga plays in a traditional quartet lineup with his proven fellow-musicians, Kristaps Vanadziņš on keyboards, Reinis Ozoforliņš on double bass and Kaspars Kurdeko on drums. The concert, performed just one day after Latvia’s Independence Day, is also a kind of introduction to Three Days of Latvian Music in the BMC, an event of classical & contemporary music and jazz, coming in January 2015.
