Ben Lamar Gay Masterclass (US)
Ben LaMar Gay is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, poet and polyhistor who is often described by the music press as a visionary of 21st century jazz, and his work as "uncategorisable" and "highly original". One of the most prolific figures in Chicago's creative music community, he is almost ubiquitous as a representative of the progressive jazz zeitgeist that sprouted from his hometown. He has worked with Makaya McCraven and Jaimie Branch, and his records are produced by one of the leading modern jazz labels, International Anthem.
His 2021 album, Opern Arms to Open Us, was praised by both professionals and audiences. He played at the Opus Jazz Club on one of his many European tours, giving one of the most outstanding concerts of the year with his group in the autumn of 2022. Both his instrumental playing (cornet, synthesizer) and his vocal recordings are characterised by a transgression of boundaries, a search for new musical sounds and possibilities.
His post-modern troubadour music is as much about the blues and jazz traditions of Chicago as it is about the gospel of his childhood summers in Alabama, urban hip-hop or Brazilian tropical music, but it also has a touch of Prince, D'Angelo and Radiohead, not to mention experimental noise and drone music.
The masterclass is open to all instrumentalists or singers.
