There can hardly be any talk of nu or future jazz without mentioning the name of Bugge Wesseltoft. In the early 1990s he was still in the ECM fold, recording with Jan Garbarek, Arild Andersen, Terje Rypdal and Sidsel Endresen, before he discovered the progressivity inherent in electronic dance music, and turned away from the Northern jazz tradition.
In 1995 he founded his own label, Jazzland Records, which released his New Conception of Jazz in 1996. The album stormed the scene: it immediately won a Grammy, and the new sound found a great many followers, who still refer to the record as a point of reference.
Following a hiatus of ten years, Bugge Wesseltoft revived the New Conception of Jazz on its 20th anniversary. With new partners in a new age, his Budapest concert is certain to be as up-to-date as it gets.
