The successful screening series of the Estonian Institute presenting the numerous links between Arvo Pärt’s music and cinema is to be continued in 2016. Pärt’s music inspired numerous film directors from Jean-Luc Godard through Tom Tykwer.

THE BANISHMENT

directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev

Alex, his wife Vera, and their two children move from their home in the city to stay in his father’s old house in the countryside. As the family adjusts to this new environment, Vera reveals to Alex that she is pregnant by another man. Alex forces Vera to terminate the pregnancy and confronts the man he believes to be the father.

The film premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d'Or. Konstantin Lavronenko (Alex) won the Best Actor Award at the festival.

Works of Arvo Pärt used in the soundtrack: Für Alina; Ode VII (Kanon Pokajanen)

The screening will be introduced by film- and music critic László Kolozsi. (in Hungarian)
