Why is it hard to listen to 20th century music?

Is it really so hard? Is it really easier to listen to Bach than to Schönberg? It is worth to investigate, how we listen to music. What do we hear of it, and what we hear different than it was supposed by the composer? Does it help or does it restrain reception?
