Giulia Valle Trio (E)
- Giulia Valle - double bass
- Marco Mezquida - piano
- David Xirgu - drums
“I’ve been working a lot on the trio format over the last year, in contrast to other of my projects that feature a wider use of music instruments. My aim is to show the most synthetic and interactive part of my musical discourse. So with the help of two great musicians Marco Merzquida and David Xirgu (...) I am providing some new compositions along with some revisited tunes that were already part of my repertoire. I’m enjoying a marvelous creative process just as much as I hope you’ll all enjoy it”
Giulia Valle
An outstanding figure on Barcelona’s fervently creative jazz scene, Italian-born bassist Giulia Valle immersed herself in the European classical tradition at the Liceo Conservatory, but honed her jazz chops in New York City studying with Scott Colley and Ben Street. She’s forged close ties with other American masters such as Jason Lindner, Jeff Williams, Gerald Cleaver, and John McNeil, who featured her on 2003’s This Way Out. She made her debut as a leader with Colorista, a startlingly beautiful session that captured her cosmopolitan vision of jazz laced with Spanish, Brazilian, and Argentine influences. The healthy bonds linking Barcelona and New York City continued to invigorate her music, while she released a string of excellent sessions showcasing her commanding bass work and emotionally nuanced compositions.
Visitors of the Opus Jazz Club may well remember the tremendous concert of the bassist's quintet, the Giulia Valle Group. Now she brings to the Opus her prodigious working trio featuring brilliant pianist Marco Mezquida and drummer David Xirgu, a veteran of work with David Liebman, Tete Montoliu, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Mulgrew Miller. The Giulia Valle Trio represents the total freedom of expression and interaction between its three members. They know each other perfectly and seeing them and listening to them is a journey for all the senses, especially considering that the repertoire is based on music from the very creative and internationally recognized Giulia Valle. Her music, intense and surprising, catches us from the first moment and takes us through all sorts of paths. It is full of nuances and contrasts, in which rhythmic intensity and sweeping melodies, high voltage and intimate situations intertwine, surprising the listener again and again.
