Sort of a modern-times version of the Beauty and the Beast, we could call the (musical) encounter of Vienna Art Orchestra founder Matthias Rüegg and IPOP-student (Institute for Popular Music, Vienna) Julia Pallanch. After disbanding of the legendary VAO three years ago, the Swiss-born pianist-composer, one of the doyens of Austrian jazz since about three decades, held some lectures at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, where Julia was one of his pupils. After some conversation on music the extremely talented, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, also a former keyboard player and singer of an electro-pop group and the “jazz old-hand” Rüegg came shortly to the conclusion that as a first chance for Lia and a last chance for Matthias, they realize Matthias’ long-time dream, to re-shape Schubert’s songs cycle Winterreise in the jazz idiom. The musical rejuvenating cure wipes off the romantic pathos settled on the almost 200-year-old songs. In Lia’s English translation, on her voice’s warm and fresh timbre, by the elegant rendition of the quartet with a sure sense of proportion, the Lieder show up beside their well-known pain and suffering also the hope and optimism in Schubert’s music. A true musical delicacy for every open-minded Schubert- or jazz-fan!
