POLISH JAZZ FOR BUDAPEST 2013: Piotr Wojtasik Quartet
His playing hailed from the beginning as a “true revelation”, trumpeter Piotr Wojtasik is intensively present on the Polish jazz scene since the Eighties. Both with own groups as a contributor he toured throughout Europe's renowned festivals, clubs and works regularly with foreign, mostly US musicians. He had concerts with Dave Liebman or Kenny Garrett, and in 2006 under his leadership the album We want to give thanks was recorded in New York with the contribution of such jazz giants as the legendary rhythm section Reggie Workman-Billy Hart and the Gary Bartz-Billy Harper saxophone duet. The Hungarian jazz-lovers know him well, as he played at former BMC festivals as guest of Dániel Szabó Trio or Kornél Fekete-Kovács. During these occasions he became mesmerised by Hungarian sax player Viktor Tóth. Initial invitations for Viktor were soon crowned by becoming him a steady member of the Piotr Wojtasik Quartet, along with US drummer John Betsch and extremely talented young Polish double-bass player Michal Barański. The sound of Wojtasik's music roots mainly in 60s jazz but is coloured amazingly by folk influences and modern arrangements of the trumpeter. The original drummer of the quartet is now replaced by the young Dávid Hodek, whose ripe “black” playing makes him already exceed the category of the prodigy he was acclaimed immediately after his show-up.
