Tuba or not Tuba: that is the question
Wagner loved it, while Verdi hated, Mendelssohn never heard its sound and Berlioz never wrote any note for it. But what were then the instruments that preceded the tuba in the symphonic orchestras? How did they sound? Why did they disappeare from the orchestras?
Some of the questions the two-part series of Roland Szentpáli is trying to find answers to. In the recent years he did a lot of efforts to bring back the 19th century's low brass instruments, ophicleide, serpent, etc., to the concert life.
