Take the MOL Train: Carlos Bica-Carsten Daerr-Samuel Rohrer (P-D-CH)

21:00
Opus Jazz Club
Carlos Bica - double bass Carsten Daerr - piano Samuel Rohrer - drums
Double-bass player and composer Carlos Bica is one of the most prestigious representative of Portugal on the European jazz scene. The lyrical approach of his playing, the eerie and haunting touch of his melodies became long ago his trademark; his compositions, uniting the folklore of his homeland with any kind of modern jazz, are songs without lyrics, actually. Among the numerous musical outfits under his leadership and his theatre-, film- and dance-projects, the widest international recognition was brought for him by his trio, Azul, featuring German guitarist Frank Möbius und US star-drummer Jim Black. The trio celebrated its 15th birthday in 2011 with the release of their 5th album, Things About, acclaimed by critics as their best effort.
Bica has worked with the likes of Maria João, Kenny Wheeler, Aki Takase, Lee Konitz, Joey Baron, John Zorn, Paolo Fresu, or Markus Stockhausen. Though his present European trio is only a few years old, his musical collaboration with German pianist Carsten Daerr dates back a decade, both of them playing in the trio of Kristiina Tuomi. Daerr may be a well-known musician for regular BMC-fans, being guest of different former BMC festivals and events already, and he is also featured on two albums released on BMC Records, Gondellied in the Sahara and Tribute to Marley. Drummer Samuel Rohrer is also a sought-after musician, appearing on numerous ECM records and working with artists like Daniel Erdmann, Vincent Courtois, Frank Möbius, Colin Vallon, Harmen Fraanje or Rudi Mahall. It’s not an overstatement that the members of the trio played with almost a complete Who’s Who of the European Jazz Scene.
We can surely expect an evening of solid, contemporary mainstream jazz, lots of emotion, energy and lyricism.
