The Piotr Wyleżoł Trio, active since 2001, is regarded as one of the best cool jazz trios in Poland. Its members may be well known to regular visitors of the Opus, as each of them was appearing on last November's POLISH JAZZ FOR BUDAPEST 2013 festival at the BMC; Piotr Wyleżoł as member of the special piano duo, DuoDram, and the solid rhythm section as backing of the pianist Artur Dutkiewicz.
Piotr Wyleżoł leads his trio since the beginning of his artistic career. Their third album, Children's Episodes, released in 2009 on the New Talent series of the renowned Fresh Sound Records label, was nominated for a Fryderyk Award (Poland's equivalent of Grammy), in the Jazz Album of The Year category. Beside his activities as leader in different groups he also had occasion to work with a number of leading jazz figures, including Gary Bartz, Billy Hart, Steve Logan, Monty Waters, Bennie Maupin, Ed Schuller, Urszula Dudziak, Tomasz Stańko, or Mika Urbaniak. Since 2005 Wyleżoł has worked regularly with Nigel Kennedy, taking part in the violinist's own projects as well as performing classical concerts with him, playing harpsichord in a repertoire of Bach and Vivaldi.
The trio’s guest at their opus gig is US sax player Stephen Riley, who played as sideman with such greats as Wynton Marsalis, Norah Jones, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Bobby McFerrin, Joe Henderson, Grover Washington, Joshua Redman, Ryan Kysor, Natalie Cole, Lionel Hampton, Frank Foster, Chris Potter or Ray Charles. So it’s no surprise that he found effortlessly his place in the music of Wyleżoł’s Trio, playing with them regularly.
