The History of Electroacoustic Music in Hungary - The Beginnings │ Lecture of István Szigeti 4/1.
- István Szigeti - composer
- István Horváth - sound engineer
The first appearance of electro-acoustic music in Hungary is conected to composer Zoltán Pongrácz. He was the one whose attention was first drawn to the genre in the mid-60s by listening to a series in the Dutch Radio. Zoltán Pongrácz and Iván Patachich visited Utrecht to study this entirely new possibility of creativity. After their return they begun an endless experimentation, however, the local opportunities were not really given. Therefore, they could realize their first works in Bratislava, Belgrade and other foreign studios.
Iván Patachich, then already the musical director of MAFILM, set up an experimental workshop (Exaustud) for making possible to begin work in Hungary. In 1973 the Hungarian Radio bought the most up-to-date studio synthesizer of the time, a Moog III / C, and in 1974 the first electro-acoustic studio (ELZEN) was founded. Hungary and Hungarian composers soon became top-notch participants on the global scene, earning numerous international awards for their works – but that's another story. The four-part series presents the path from a promising start to the inglorious end.
