Program: Johann Christoph Bach: “Mit Weinen hebt sichs an” “Ach, daß ich Wassers gnug hätte” “Fürchte dich nicht” Johann Sebastian Bach: “Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit” - Cantata BWV 106 (Actus tragicus) “Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich” - Cantata BWV 150 Johann Christoph Bach: “Meine Freundin, du bist schön” The “other Bach” of this concert, Johann Christoph Bach (1642 –1703) was the son of Heinrich Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach's great uncle, hence he was Johann Sebastian's first cousin once removed. He was also the uncle of Maria Barbara Bach, J.S. Bach's first wife. Johann Christoph had a reputation as a composer that was only equalled by that of Johann Sebastian within the Bach family during his lifetime. He was organist at Eisenach and later a member of the court chamber orchestra there. Some of his works were later attributed to Johann Sebastian, but were recently recognized as written by Johann Christoph. One of the most famous works is the cantata Meine Freundin, du bist schön, based on the Song of Solomon.
Orfeo Orchestra, founded by György Vashegyi in 1991, use their present name after their successful Hungarian premiere of the complete L’Orfeo by Monteverdi. The ensemble is one of the best national interpreters of old music, in Hungary they have premiered several pieces on period instruments.
