Levitation, an in-between condition: the UMZE Ensemble’s programme, featuring largely Hungarian contemporary works, explores our existence in motion. In keeping with the orchestra's primary mission, they have once again selected works by composers who are either directly associated with the ensemble or whose work extends beyond it. At the heart of the programme is László Sándor’s Levitation, a work that transforms the BMC’s main hall into an instrument, Bálint Laczkó’s piece composed for UMZE, which also utilises multi-channel electronics, and the Hungarian premiere of Terrestre by the recently deceased Finnish composer Kaia Saariaho – a work that was originally conceived as part of a flute concerto but can also be performed as a standalone piece. On this occasion, the resonant sound of the harp unifies the programme, which features Iván Madarász’s piece, now part of the standard chamber music repertoire and rich in impressionistic sounds, as well as a composition by one of the most outstanding talents of the younger generation of composers, Zsófia Persányi. From classical instrumental music, through unique spatial arrangement, to the very latest sound technology, the ensemble showcases a wide range of elements at this concert, whilst fundamentally seeking an emotional and intellectual connection with the audience through every note played – and through the discussions accompanying the pieces –, thereby demonstrating that contemporary Hungarian music is alive and relevant.
