New Jazz From Finland 2023
The fresh sounds of Finnish jazz at Opus Jazz Club
27 and 28 October

This autumn, we dedicate a weekend to the fresh and thought-provoking world of Finnish jazz. The two-day event is again supported by the Finnish Institute in Hungary, FinnAgora.

Superposition, a young Finnish supergroup from Helsinki, brings together outstanding musicians who had all performed on our stage before. Their immersive music, demanding the listener's full attention, presents powerful statements rich in musical ideas and solid in their execution. The intense energy of collaborative creation explodes from beneath the darker tone of the members' varied compositions. Their debut album, released on We Jazz Records, won the award for Jazz album of the year at the annual Finnish Emma Awards in 2020. Linda Fredriksson is known for her trio Mopo, while Adele Sauros recently released her latest album with Katu Kaiku. The band's lead drummer Olavi Louhivuori has worked with musicians such as Tomasz Stanko, but has also made a name for himself with solo projects and his band Oddarrang, while bassist Mikael Saastamoinen's best-known project is OK:KO.

In Kaisa Mäensivu's music, Nordic noir meets the sparks of New York. The Finnish double bass player expresses her vision of music as a way of dealing with life events in emotive, sophisticated compositions: sometimes she invites you to a groovy festive dance, sometimes she makes you reflect on mysteries and tragedies. Her rich, determined playing often takes surprising turns. Founded in 2015, Mäensivu's band debuted two years later with the tightly knit, imaginative In the Key of K. Since then she has moved to NYC and created an international career. And though she brought new players into her orbit, she kept the band's name, landing on Dave Douglas’ prestigious Greenleaf Music label for the follow-up release Taking Shape, her first album as a New Yorker.

Tickets for both concerts are available for 3,500 HUF at the venue, at bmc.jegy.hu and at InterTicket Jegypont partners across Hungary.
