The Flemish pianist Peter Vandenberghe and trumpeter Bart Maris play together for 25 years in different bigger formations, like X-Legged Sally or Flat Earth Society (the latter performing on October 16 in BMC Concert Hall, as part of CAFe Budapest, strongly recommended!). With their duo they are focusing on much more direct dialogues in their playing, using compositions of Bart and free improvised pieces: clear choices and constant vigilance prevails on appointments and solid form. The basic principle is strictly acoustically with predilection for large dynamic contrasts and ever-changing density, colour and texture parameters which weigh as heavily as tonality and rhythm, giving to their performances a lot of the unexpected and surprising.

Their debut, Getting Lost in Tiny Spaces, was released last year on El Negocito Records. The album is comprised of recordings of two extensive recording sessions, the first one in Kraakhuis of the Bijloke Ghent, a concert hall with very present acoustics where they could give maximum focus to sound and dynamics, while the second in Salon Agust Debouck of Quatre Mains (Piano store, Ghent) where articulation and timing are more in the focus due to smaller size of the room. There they re-recorded all written material and gave themselves plenty of time for improvising, exploring the character of this space. The two sessions resulted about seven hours of recorded material: the most different versions of the orignals, and an even more a splendid versality of instant improvisations, sometimes long streched soundscapes, some short and direct, which they called Tiny Spaces. Making a selection in this tremendous variety of Tiny Spaces and originals, we can only reveal glimpse of imagination of this duo as only their live concerts give us an experience of the full palet of sounds and colours.
