Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792) is often referred to as the “Swedish Mozart” by popular literature. This comparison is essentially valid: not only are the two composers linked on the timeline (they were born in the same year and Kraus died only a year later than Mozart) but it was these two composers that Haydn hailed as the most ingenious and original from among their contemporaries. Kraus was one of the most talented and multifaceted composers of the 18th century; the dramatic contrast and passion characterising his music is still fascinating. He is considered to be a composer of stage music, but he also composed a large number of instrumental pieces, especially for orchestra and chamber orchestra. Symphonies have also played a major role on his life and although we know of only 14 that are definitely of his authorship, researchers assume that there were several others that have been lost or attributed to other composers.
Capella Savaria, founded in 1981 in Szombathely, is Hungary’s oldest orchestra performing on period instruments. The orchestra is conducted by Nicholas McGegan, hailed as “one of the finest baroque conductors of his generation” (London Independent). nicholasmcgegan.com www.capellasavaria.hu Tickets are available for 1000 HUF on the spot, in the national JEGYPONT network of Interticket and online at JEGY.HU.
