Not many composers had the privilege to end their career at the height of their success, surrounded by praise and wealth, and Vivaldi was no exception. Seeking an opportunity to be freed from debt, he travelled to Vienna where he experienced a sudden illness and died. Just like Mozart, he rests in an unmarked grave somewhere in Vienna’s quarters that have been repurposed and rebuilt by now – but like Mozart, he did not truly die. He travels around the world every day with his music – a fact that might indeed serve as a compensation for all his failures to his stormy and ambitious soul.
