John Coltrane recorded A Love Supreme in 1964 at the zenith of his career. The coherent four-movement composition is regarded as one of the landmark pieces of jazz. Since its release the album sold in more than ten million copies. The four movements walk a sacral path from the starting Acknowledgement with its mantra-like repetition of “A Love Supreme” through Resolution, and Pursuance to the closing Psalm with words written by Coltrane himself.
The trio of Gábor Juhász, Miklós Lukács and Péter Szalai decided to perform this significant work in an entirely different setting. Throughout the careful preparation of their particular performance they have strived for keeping the original structure and spirit of the original composition, as well as to build up improvisations using their own means but following Coltrane’s principles.
Coltrane’s opus gives the program of the concert’s first part, while in the second the trio plays Gábor Juhász compositions as well as a Debussy-transcription by Miklós Lukács.
