21:00
Opus Jazz Club
Peter Rom - guitar
Andreas Schaerer - voice
Martin Eberle - trumpet
Opus Jazz Club’s series introducing the Austrian jazz scene, by support of the Austrian Cultural Forum, started with three successful gigs in 2013. Throughout the whole 2014 season ten (!) further concerts will give us an overview about jazz of the neighbouring country.
The opening gig features a trio comprised of two approved Austrian instrumentalists and a virtuoso singer from Switzerland. Guitarist Peter Rom is well-known among contemporary figures of jazz in Austria not only because of his groups, like Peter Rom Trio, but also because being a founding member of Jazzwerkstatt, the famous Austrian jazz organization and label. He won several times prizes of Austrian and German jazz critics, and was awarded with the Hans Koller Prize in 2006. Trumpeter Martin Eberle is an outstanding figure of the musicians around Jazzwerkstatt, who, besides his continuous activities in jazz, last year won the German Price for World Music with the group Die Strottern & Blech. His own quartet, Compost 3, will be presented later in the series, according to plans.
Singer Andreas Schaerer is regarded by professionals as one of the most innovative European jazz singers. His own group, Hildegard Lernt Fliegen, is a favourite of European festivals. (It is our intention, to book them at Opus, as well.)
Similarly to its lineup, the compositions of the trio are unusual, too. Elements of swing and African music, blues and hip-hop are formed to an unmistakable musical unit in the chamber-workshop of the three musicians. Besides his excellent skills in singing, Schaerer has a brilliant stage presence, radiating explosive and overwhelming energy towards his companions, or in the contrary, giving them space to lyrical and meditative passages as well.
Bulk of the program will be the material from the trio’s second CD, At the age of six I wanted to be a cook, released recently. In her review about the album Katie Bull from The New York City Jazz Record wrote: “Schaerer’s voice, Peter Rom’s guitar and Martin Eberle’s trumpet weave elements of Swing, African music, blues and even hip-hop edges into an entirely unpredictable and engaging avant-groove like nothing you’ve heard before.”
