If someone wins nine and twelve times, respectively, in the “best male singer” category of his country’s two most important music awards, and if he is the one, whom Bobby McFerrin sings a duet with in Prague, then it surely can be officially declared that he, Dan Bárta, is “The Czech Jazz Singer”. The leader of the vocalist’s backing trio, Robert Balzar, is also a renowned representative of the Czech jazz scene, contributing in the recording of more than 40 albums, among them with such stars as John Abercrombie. The trio arrives with the program of their actual album with Dan Bárta, Theyories, which contains covers from performers such as Simply Red, The Police, The Cult, Jamiroquai, Björk, Led Zeppelin, or AC/DC. The formula of well-known songs performed with jazz arrangements may be tried and tested; still such programs often end up without having any flavour. This is definitely not the case with the Czech quartet, where all dishes have their own relish. As a matter of fact, the concert of the Robert Balzar Trio featuring Dan Bárta, the exceptional and charismatic singer with an extraordinary suggestive stage presence, is an ideal lead-up of the forthcoming concerts for Opus Jazz Club’s 2014 season featuring foreign artists – which will have an increasing significance in the new season.
