Owner of the Liszt-award, Kálmán Oláh is both an internationally acclaimed pianist and original, creative composer, stretching fervently his musical boundaries. In 2006 he was awarded with BMI’s Grand Prize of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Composers Competition.
The Kálmán Oláh Sextet plays a contemporary jazz, influenced strongly by 20th century’s compositional music, especially by Bartók’s oeuvre. Repertoire of the group is based on the leader’s handcrafted, multi-part compositions and original arrangements on traditional Hungarian music, though never lacking groove, pulsation and virtuoso improvisation of jazz.
