Since February 2026, numerous concerts have been held across Hungary as part of the Kurtág100 series of events organised by the BMC, which will draw to a close on 19 December in the BMC Concert Hall. There is a subtle network of connections underlying the pieces featured in the programme, presenting Kurtág’s work within the context of musical life and music history. The concert opens with the third movement of Bach’s Sonata for Solo Violin No. 2, arranged for string orchestra by Leó Weiner, the legendary chamber music teacher to several generations of renowned musicians and composers – including György Kurtág himself. Kurtág’s oeuvre is represented by Petite musique solennelle, which was commissioned by the Lucerne Festival to mark the 90th birthday of its founder and director, Pierre Boulez. The programme is rounded off by one grand-scale work each from Beethoven and Schumann, two composers who play a defining role in Kurtág’s musical universe.
