“We should compose dramatic works that don't require a word-for-word understanding of the text in order to understand what is happening on stage. A text of this kind should not record conceptual implications, but should directly reflect human emotions and behaviours in such a way that the moments and actions on the stage emerge as meaningful despite the lack of conceptual meaning in the text.” Aventures and its sequel, Nouvelles Aventures, create exactly this fictional and artificial language, worked out from vowels and consonants. Ligeti leads us on an adventure through the world of human emotions, from the humorous surface to the terrifying or even mystical depths. This emblematic pair of pieces is accompanied by two of Ligeti's cycles for wind quintet, a work by Lukas Ligeti and two compositions by contemporary composers commemorating Ligeti.
