Luís Vicente – John Dikeman – William Parker – Hamid Drake (PT/US)

20:00
Opus Jazz Club
Featuring:
  • Luís Vicente - trumpet
  • John Dikeman - tenor saxophone
  • Brad Jones - double bass
  • Hamid Drake - drums, percussion

When these four join forces, you can count not only on loads of freedom, energy and groove, but also on authentic, soulful and spiritual interaction at the highest level. Free jazz is born from a desire for freedom, and that almost automatically entails a socio-political component. This was no different on Goes Without Saying, But It's Got To Be Said, the international quartet's 2020 debut album. It was the recording of their very first concert and a colorful showcase, with vibrant, turbulent free jazz, inspired by the variant that emerged in the 1960s, but also with vibrant emotions, melodic lyricism and ritualistic intensity. The Portuguese Luís Vicente and the American John Dikeman, who arrived in Belgium via Amsterdam, are already in the European vanguard of improvisers balancing tradition and freedom. Bassist Brad Jones (replacing William Parker) is an absolute master who has played with Ornette Coleman, Misha Mengelberg, Dave Douglas and is also the bassist for the James Brandon Lewis Quartet. Finally, Hamid Drake is one of the most inspiring drummers and percussionists in contemporary jazz, an inspiring figure who combines depth and groove. The group will present their second album, out in early October.
