Guitarist Sal Salvador (1925–1999) and his quintet were featured on Blue Note's first famous series of records, not long after Monk and Bud Powell. Yet, like their saxophonist Frank Socolow, he was largely forgotten. Salvador played on the East Coast from 1945, then joined Stan Kenton's band. He also appeared in the famous concert film Jazz on a Summer’s Day. A significant part of his musical career was devoted to perfecting his unique strumming technique, and as a teacher, he even wrote a guitar method. His Blue Note recording showcases a supremely effortless, spirited, yet refined playing style, influenced by guitarist Charlie Christian and bebop. Both he and Socolow avoided affectation, which gives their music a particularly direct character. This style will be evoked at the concert by guitarist Áron Komjáti, while Socolow's part will be performed by Árpád Dennert, who is also known for his no-frills playing.
