The four-concert-series of the Saint Ephraim Male Choir draws not only from the music of Notre Dame Cathedral and the period called in music history as the Notre Dame School of Polyphony , but puts this trend, having its compositional effects up to contemporary music, into a context of cultural history. The first phenomenon of this was the “musical revolution” of the 12th century with its special way of seeing things and its musical brilliance, doubtlessly influencing the development of European musical history.
Ludus Danielis is a worldwide popular medieval mystery-play, following the narrative of the biblical story of Daniel at the court of Belshazzar, introduced in Hungary by the Schola Hungarica, and later, in Hungarian translation of Tamás Bubnó, performed successfully by the Budapest Singer School. We can regard it as one of the first operas, catching the phantasy of present time opera or theatre makers, just the same as early- or even world-music ensembles. Main reason of this popularity is the plasticity of the work’s musical material. As musical notation of the 1200s gives few indication regarding rhythmic, key and arrangement, in the joint production of Saint Ephraim Male Choir and Á la cARTe a brand new Ludus Danielis will be born. In their revisited presentation the characters of the Biblical story are true flesh-and-blood opera singers and LEGO-icons, mischievous kings, satraps and cube lions at the same time…
