The first phenomenon of this was the “musical revolution” of the 12th century with its special way of seeing things and its musical brilliance, doubtlessly influencing the development of European musical history. Though the “first opera” of the world, Ludus Danielis, still treats a Biblical theme, its music and novel tone already forecasts the age of the minstrels: the profane music of Europe in a progress of secularisation. The voice of the troubadour becomes an important, everyday “institution” in the 13th century – and remains still up to our times. The concerts keeps track on this path, by performing works of Neidhart von Reuenthal, Gilles Binchois, Josquin des Prés, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Ferenc Liszt, Ferenc Farkas, cantigas of Alfonso the Wise, carols of Henry VIII, songs of Sebestyén Tinódi Lantos, Bálint Balassi and Tamás Cseh. Masters of old days were familiar both with sacred and profane music, this evening we can enjoy great dances, songs and serenades written by them. But in Notre Dame’s shadow, popular music provided also remarkable authors and singers whose works, outside the walls of the gothic cathedral, complete the musical map of Europe. Kings, dukes, masters, soldiers and “true” composers confess their love to “eternal beauty” tonight.
