Monica Akihary - vocals Niels Brouwer - guitar Wolter Wierbos - trombone Owen Hart Jr. - drums Boi Akih is at the moment maybe the mostly sought-after world-jazz quartet of the Netherlands, lead by Monika Akihary, a singer of exotic beauty from the Moluccas, and her husband, guitarist and composer Niels Brouwer. The group, with its sound based on the interplay between colourful warmth of the vocals and the brilliant playing on the acoustic guitar, was formed in 1997, and has released six albums since then, mostly at the famous German label, ENJA. Their last album Circles in a Square Society, issued in 2012, became a favourite of the critics in its category, and reached the status “Album of the year” on several charts. The music of Boi Akih, with its unusual line-up rounded up with trombone and drums, crosses all borders between jazz, blues, Indonesian folk, melting them easily by wonderful improvisational parts. Let them be cover versions of pieces by Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley or Jimi Hendrix, or own compositions, the result is always inspiring and challenging.
