Kálmán Oláh’s trio, supplemented with Czech, Slovak, and Polish guest artists, gave concerts three times in the last six months, with the support of the Hungarian Presidency of V4 Countries, in each foreign V4 capitals. The success of these concerts inspired the Slovak participants to release a joint V4 album. Thus the closing concert of the V4 Jazz Week features a seasoned team of musicians.
The core of the outfit is Kálmán Oláh’s Trio Midnight, active since almost 25 years, and recognized as one of the most outstanding Hungarian mainstream groups. The Slovak guest, trumpeter Lukáš Oravec won this year with his quartet the Esprit-prize of his homeland for the best Slovak jazz album of the year. The guest from Poland, trombone player Jacek Namysłowski played several times in Hungary in groups of his father, the legendary saxophone player Zbigniew Namysłowski. In recent years he has established himself on the Polish jazz scene on his own as well, recognized as an excellent leader, due to his different groups like Jacek Namysłowski Quintet, Generation Next, or J4zz PuZone.
The Czech saxophone player Rostislav Fraš studied at the Conservatory of Prague and then in Poland at the Jazz Institute of the Academy for Arts in Katowice. After graduating he soon became an active member of the vivid Prague jazz scene as member of different groups like Karel Růžička Septet, Limited Edition, Štěpán Markovič Saxtet, Zuzana Lapčíková Quintet, also as soloist of the Czech Radio Big Band. He has also participated in several Czech and Slovak joint projects.
