On his CD Bartók's Room the Slovakian pianist Ján Hajnal doesn't interpret his great role model, rather lets himself be inspired by the Swedish jazz legend Jan Johansson and the folklore of his homeland to record some of his own compositions before a live audience. The old master shows himself virtuosic and empathetic when it comes to musically satisfying the very suggestive titles of his compositions. 'Blues For Kosice' and 'May In Kosice' are highly emotive eulogies to Hajnal's home, while a piece like 'Zemplinsky fair' tends strongly to classical music. As is to be expected, with all its imposing power of expression, Hajnal's play also takes impressionistic traits. The performance is then very intimate, which helps to give to the album a comprehensible bow, to be in no way inferior to a typical concert performance in terms of drama.”
