POLISH JAZZ FOR BUDAPEST 2013: Jazz-photo exhibition of Paweł Karnowski
18:00
Foyer
Jazz-photo exhibition of Pawel Karnowski, opened by Katarzyna Sitko, director of Polish Institute.
“No staged portraits of musicians, no pictures of a whole band and no orgies of colourful spotlights. Instead, Paweł Karnowski shows in his exhibition black-and-white photographs ensuing from his inner bond with the musicians and his enthusiasm for their music, photographs taken at live concerts and live improvisations all over Europe, close-ups of important protagonists of contemporary avant-garde jazz, photographs that condense the essence of the experienced music.
The atmosphere of the concerts, the musician’s tension, his concentration, his fusion with the instrument or his physical union with the music — all of this is mirrored in the photographs, can be read on the faces, manifests itself in the composition or in the lighting. Thanks to the lambda prints used in this exhibition, the virtues of black-and-white photography even in the digital medium are shown once again to advantage.
Paweł Karnowski, born in 1971, is a jazz photographer who has been visiting selected concerts and festivals in Europe for many years.
For him, experiencing the concerts live is still more important than taking photographs. Quite possibly, the power of Paweł Karnowski’s images can be attributed to this fact.
His photographs have been exhibited in Budapest, Győr, Zemplén, (Hungary), Bydgoszcz, Kraków (Poland), Prague (Czech Republic) and
in Schorndorf (Germany), in each case as an individual exhibition.
At present Paweł Karnowski lives in Budapest.”
